Lizzo is Changing the World
Lizzo's message is simple: love yourself, no matter what.
With a voice that can move mountains, lyrics that can heal broken hearts, and a spirit that radiates pure positivity, Lizzo is so much more than a musician – she's a beacon of hope, an ambassador of self-love, and a fairy godmother of sorts. In a world that often shames people for rejecting rigid social norms and beauty standards, Lizzo's confidence empowers others to see their own inherent worth.
Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo is a chart-topping musician, body positivity advocate, and all-around badass. She grew up in Houston, Texas, looking up to powerful female musicians like Beyonce and Missy Elliott. It wasn't long before she discovered her own talent for singing and rapping, turning into one of the biggest stars of our time.
After moving to Minneapolis to pursue her music career, Lizzo quickly became a local sensation with her dynamic stage presence and confident, empowering lyrics. Her breakthrough moment came in 2014 with the release of her single "Batches and Cookies," which went viral on YouTube and paved the way for her debut album, "Lizzobangers."
Lizzo's music is more than just catchy tunes. Her music is a celebration of self-love and individuality, captivating the hearts of so many people.
Lizzo is my favorite artist and holds a very special place in my heart. Her music inspires me to understand the power I hold as a woman and creates a space to envision just how far I can go in life.
”Woke up feelin’ like I just might run for president / Even if there ain’t no precedent, switchin’ up the messaging / I’m about to add a little estrogen.”
Lizzo, “Good as Hell”
Her music helped me get through some of the darkest periods of my life, especially her newest album, Special. The last track, “A Very Special Message from Lizzo,” encapsulates the essence of this powerful album.
“So here we are. You’re finally able to listen to this album. I’ve been working on it for three years and I know it’s been a long time, and it’s about damn time I put it out. But you have to know that I took my time for me, but I also took my time for you. I wrote almost 170 songs for this album to find these perfect 12 songs to bring you because I felt like this was what not only what I needed to hear, but you needed to hear and the whole world needs to hear. These are songs about love whether it’s self-love, love for your family, love for your friends, or love for a significant other. I really believe that love for one’s self and for others is what this world needs to be a better place. If you can just take the time to give a little love to yourself every single day, treat yourself with respect, treat yourself the way you deserve to be treated, and then treat somebody else with that same love and respect, that expands, that grows, and that can save a life. It saved my life so many times and I’m so honored to be a part of your life so I hope you enjoy the music. I hope you cry, laugh, dance, twerk, do the splits, do whatever you want to do. I’m honored to be doing it with you. So thank you for listening to ‘Special,’’ loving ‘Special’ and being special, cause if you don’t take nothing away from this album I want you to know you’re special and I’m so glad you’re still with us. Thank you.”
Lizzo taught me to love myself, be authentic and find beauty in vulnerability. If you haven’t listened to Special yet, run (don’t walk) to your preferred music streaming service and give it a listen.
